ERYSIKHTHON AND THE NYMPH BELOVED OF DEMETER

FROM THE SERIES : SILVESTRE

An ongoing series which explores the magic & mystery which has surrounded woodland for over 2000 years by different Cultures of the world.

In Greek Mythology, Erysikhthon was a Thessalian king who chopped down the sacred grove of the goddess Demeter in order to build himself a feast-hall. From the midst of the oak came a voice, "I who dwell in this tree am a nymph beloved of Demeter, and dying by your hands, forewarn you that punishment awaits you."  As punishment for the crime the goddess inflicted him with insatiable hunger, driving him to exhaust his riches and finally, in abject poverty, devour his own flesh.
